There are a lot of people who have had some experience driving a truck. Those who have worked on farms, on construction sites, or even in mines may have driven trucks within the work environment. Because they were not driving on public roads, they were not required to obtain a commercial drivers license (CDL). If you want to convert that driving experience into a regular truck driving job, you can simply by obtaining your commercial drivers license. You can study the requirements for a CDL online in the comfort of your own home and at your own pace.
Online CDL training is straightforward. Once you have access to the program, you will be taken, step by step, through six sections broken into two levels of three – the core and the endorsements. The topics covered include:
- General Knowledge
- Air Brakes
- Combination Vehicles
- Doubles and Triples
- Tank Vehicles, and
- Hazardous Materials
You are quizzed regularly and there is an exam after each section. If you get a pass mark of 50% or more on the exams, you can then move onto the next section. This is a very effective way to study the theoretical side of truck driving. In order to gain your license, you will need to pass similar tests at your local licensing center.
Once you are comfortable with the knowledge you have gained, you can apply to sit for the official exams for a commercial drivers license. Pass those exams and you will be issued a commercial drivers permit – this allows you to drive on the open road with a fully licensed driver alongside you. Once you are satisfied that your driving skills are good, you can complete your CDL by undertaking the practical component of the commercial drivers license test. From there, a career as a truck driver awaits.
