For many prospective truck drivers, the plan is simply to drive a big rig on the open road. This is a great plan, and for many, this is exactly what they do for their entire careers. For others, there may be a desire for something a bit different. This curiosity for something different can be curbed while still in the trucking industry by attaining Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) endorsements . These endorsements allow truck drivers the opportunity to continue driving while adding a new dimension to their job.
The current endorsements are:
- School Bus/Passenger Endorsement
- Tanker Endorsement
- Air Brake Endorsement
- Doubles/Triples Endorsement
- Hazardous Materials Endorsement (HAZMAT)
These endorsements are fairly easy to attain and can really open up a whole new set of jobs for truckers. All of the endorsements only require the passing of a written test, with one exception; the HAZMAT endorsement also requires a background check. These are very small prices to pay that can potentially open a lot of jobs for a truck driver willing to make the effort.
A big rig driver willing to put in the time to study and pass the endorsement tests will instantly make his services in more demand than other truck drivers. Many trucking companies want truckers that can drive multiple types of cargo, and a truck driver with multiple endorsements will fit that bill. For a trucker that is really looking for a change of pace, the option is there to drive a bus or other passenger vehicle. Multiple endorsements just make sense for anyone getting into trucking.
